Why study languages? That one's easy...

This is a great question for any of my students to ask themselves, although perhaps not when they are up late studying for a test. There are many benefits to studying language, and in my opinion it comes down to three different reasons: self-improvement/development, connection with other people & cultures, and personal benefits.

Learning a second language will introduce you to a totally new way of learning/thinking, and will give you perspectives that you maybe didn't have before. Furthermore, there is actual science that shows that being bilingual increases your brains control and strength in situations where you need increased focus. This essentially has to do with forcing your brain to act as a sort of traffic monitor between two languages, which can result in a stronger brain when it comes to attention. Your brain is basically working out. Here is a long article that talks about it if you don't believe me: Brain article

Connecting with and learning about other cultures, of course, is another reason for learning language. Being able to speak a different language will open you up to having conversations with all kinds of people around you. People that  you probably know nothing about, but that may enlighten you and help you understand the world around you in a different way.

Lastly, it's no secret that knowing a second language can be a huge benefit when we are traveling, and even when the time comes to interview and try to get a job. Any tourist traveling through Spain, France or China who speaks the native language, will have a much different experience than some who doesn't. Not that you have to travel around the world to reap the benefits of language learning. Even going to your favorite international restaurant and ordering in the proper language can lead to random benefits.

I agreed with practically all your blog and really did benefit from reading it. I would like to use my spanish for when I travel, when I communicate with my nannies and whoever else I know that speak spanish, and when i interview.

  4. I believe that learning a second (in my case, third) language can be very useful in life. In my opinion, learning new languages can affect the way your brain thinks. I think it is always good to know and be interested in more than just one culture or language. It is also really helpful to be able to speak the language of the place you are traveling to. I am very excited to learn spanish this year!

  5. I think that learning a different language really helps me speak to different people I would never talk to before. Spanish especially works for this because I see people speaking spanish all the time and I can engage with them better, including my nanny.

  8. I think learning a new language is like learning a whole new culture. Learning Spanish would be a huge factor in my life because I have a sister who can speak Spanish and my dad usually speaks Spanish in the house. Also, my dad has a lot of Hispanic friends and workers so it would be cool to be able to communicate with them. Being bilingual would be a whole new experience for me being able to toggle back and forth from English and Spanish.

  9. Learning multiple languages makes you use parts of your brain in ways you wouldn’t normally use them during your daily routine. It causes you to draw connections between the languages and allows you to express yourself in different ways to new people. Also, learning languages opens you up to a unique culture which you would otherwise not know about.

  10. Learning a second language is similar to learning a new way of life. Languages open up so many opportunities, that you wouldn't be able to get with just English. You also get to meet new people and understand things in ways you wouldn't usually be able to.

  16. i think learning a new language is helpful because if you know spanish you can witness countries that speak spanish, for instance if you go down to central america, and learn different cultures, and you can learn about how some ways people are living and you could help them. You can communicate with them and realize how lucky some of us are. Also it knowing more than one language is helpful for picking up jobs. People who graduate college knowing more than one language are most likely going to get more job offers than those who don't. it also helps with business, because if you know mandarin companies will send you off there because Asia is a big place for business( I think not totally sure) If you know more than one language it shows that you have the brain capacity to know languages. You can experience the world by knowing different languages.

  17. I agree that learning a second language is such an important thing in life. It helps you communicate with a variety of different people, and feel the culture of that language. Especially Spanish, it is a language that so many people can speak which is one reason why I wanted to learn it. Also, I have been to Mexico a couple of times, and next time I go, I hope that I will be able to speak Spanish.

  21. I think it is important to learn languages so we can communicate with other people. I also think that it gives us a seance on community because we are in this huge world in which we can't always communicate with other people and this helps us bring our thoughts into new words that other people are able to understand. It also helps kids have a better shot to get into good collages because ivy league schools are looking for bilingual teenagers.

  22. I strongly believe learning a second language is extremely good and necessary. bilingual people have more advantages. you can get jobs easier, earn about other cultures, and connect with all kinds of people. language is therein cultural barrier but being able to learn languages breaks that and causes all different types of people to connect on so many new levels because they have something in common.

  23. I'm Belinda, just a normal kid(well, now I'm not because I'm trilingual) in seventh grade. Learning my second language English when I was six, it took me like 6 weeks to understand what the teacher is saying and I hope that happens with Spanish. 2 weeks passed and I practically memorized what the teacher said.
